Self Realising Expectations

You may have read that our perceptions influence our response to situations creating stress. Changing perceptions can have a significant benefit by reducing stress on our body and mind.

We bring about what we expect to have happen.


You can use this to your advantage.

If you see yourself as having a personality that is ‘me’ And believe that you cannot change ‘me’, then you will not improve your emotional and mental outlook.

Give yourself a break and choose to believe that humans can live, learn, and adapt – and you will find that you can and will. Research on neuroplasticity shows that the brain can even physically reshape itself, given repeated different choices.


The poet Walter D. Wintle expressed it as follows:

“If you think you are beaten, you are;

If you think you dare not, you don’t;

If you’d like to win, but think you can’t;

Its’ almost certain you won’t;

Life’s battles don’t always go

To the stronger or faster *man,

But sooner or later the *man who wins * or woman

Is the *man who thinks *he can.”

Self-Doubt and Willpower

Most self-doubt is about fears that you don’t have the ability to improve.


Life has already required you to exercise all of your control habits to a greater or lesser extent. No one is entirely unskilled in any given habit. You have always exercised choices. You have the capacity.

Can I choose to change a habit and succeed immediately?

Of course not.

Habits are powerful. It’s normal to try to change a habit and fail. But do you start again? If you expect to succeed easily – you will fail. If you expect to fail – repeatedly – you will overcome old habits and create new ones.

As Frank Sinatra sang ‘Pick yourself up, Dust yourself off, And start all over again’.
